I read somewhere on here that you can buff out the road rash on plastic lenses over the lamps,... do I need any product on the plastic at all?... cant remember where I read it on here

Try a normal polsih first by hand its amzing how much contamination is there.
I just used some regular cutting compound with an orbital buffer. That was only used after a name brand head-light restorer only made the lights worse. All I can say is it came up a treat after buffing.
Rumour has it toothpaste works as well ;-)
I've been told to use brasso. Not tried it yet tho
Never tried it on cars, but for aircraft acrylic windows, Micromesh is the stuff we use.
Finest grade is 1200, going down to 12000 grit.
One job I used to do, you started with a file, then wet and dry, then Micromesh working through the grades, and ended up with totally clear screens
gonna try tooth paste first and work up to trying this aircraft stuff! - might fit some missiles while I'm at it
