    Default Football career over!

Playing footy monday last kick of the game and I tear a ligament in my knee, heard a pop and hurt like hell. Went to a&e and confirmed it was a tear and just to set elevate and take pain killers, been advised not to play sport for 6 weeks.
Pretty gutted as normally play twice a week.

Anybody done something similar and got any advice on best route to recovery.

    yes

you need to get the best orthopaedic surgeon you can afford. go private it'll speed up your referral into NHS

    get MRI scan

get the damage repaired if MRI shows reapairable damage

then find the best and i mean best physio you can find

physio is the secret to recovery.....

    ask any footballer

by the way NHS doesn't provide adequate physio. I work for them and i had 2 ligament repairs.

you get what you pay for

find someone who recommends a good physio rather that pick one randomly

    cheers

Work for NHS too, and they've got a fast track policy for physio which I might try, but like u say they're not great.
Doc said I didn't need a scan, should I insist I want one??

To be honest, you can ask for a scan / or a second opinion, if you are not happy with your current Doc's comments.

After all it is your knee, and future mobility we are talking about.

Now - if you were a borderline diabetic or anything that earns them bonus payments, he would be referring you for allsorts. !
Referrals for sports injury treatment / assessment does not earn them any extra money.

As far as the Doc is concerned, it would merely be more paperwork for him to do, with no personal gain.

I too work for the NHS, and at the moment ALL services are cutting back to the absolute minimum care provision to save financial outlay for the GP's and trusts.

I should probably say for all those legal people reading, that the above comments are the cynical opinion of an individual and not his respective NHS trust.

Regarding Physio provision, I have close links with my local trust's therapists. For me it is a matter of "who you know" - my job relates to the mobility impaired.

Just dont take no for an answer , i like you used to play football then one day i jumped over a fence to collect a ball and my right foot promptly went straight down a pot hole hidden in the long grass .
I knew straight away that i had done some serious damage so i went to the nearest A & E this being in swindon . 2 hrs later after some xrays the doctor says you have only some bruising spent the rest of the day hopping around with the foot getting steadily worse .
Went home but decided to go to my local A& E in chertsey told them the tale of the day and that i was not happy and all i got was well if the swindon doctor says its only bruising thats what you have and was refused a second opinion but was granted physio treatment
Come first physio appointment doc has a look and says you will be ok in a couple of days second appointment i get accused of not exerciseing the foot in between visits.
Third appointment by this time me foot is completely black nearly the size of the football i was playing with when physio finally decide,e to listen to my request for more x rays,
Result 10 days after my initial injury date i finally get my x rays .
I will save you trouble of guessing how many fractures were found there was 8 including severing my heel bone and practictly every toe bone .
End result ten weeks in compression and then another five in plaster followed by countlees weeks of physio
Final result no more football ever , but i did get the satisfaction of telling the A & E doc what usless piece of s*** he was when he came to apologise .

My cousing has SNAPPED his cruciate ligament TWICE in the past so a tear isn't too bad in comparison. He had to have a synthetic ligament sown in where his used to be and missed playing football for 18 MONTHS each time it happened.

    i would demand an MRI.

if your gp won't refer you, ask for a referral to see an orthopaedic surgeon privately

that should cost you about £150 or so but well worth spending

when you get there ask for diagnosis and he will more than likely say we need MRI

at that point suggest that you can't afford the costs of that ( about £600 ) and would he please refer you back to his NHS list

that way - you cut out the gp to nhs consultant wait --

just one other thougth - does your club not have insurance you can use to help with this??

That is bad. Gutted for you. My brother dislocated his knee when playing football and took a couple of months to get back to normal, about a year and half later he dislocated the other knee falling down a step in china. That was the bad one, the chineese doc kept sayign that he had broke his leg eithen though we knew he had not. Ever since that his knees have come out a couple of times.
But from what i hear it is very painful.
touch wood i have not done anything worse then a sprained wrist.
