Default So it's not just FIAT engines....

This week's Autocar contains a guide to buying a used BMW E60 535d, and in the things to look out for section it says "Big BMW diesels have 'swirl flaps' in the inlet manifolds to help emissions. They've been known to disintegrate and be ingested into the engine".

The 2 litre ones are the same.

They have plastic inlet manifolds that wear/break and then suck it into the combustion chamber destroying the engine.

On the plus side they are nice and easy to change.

Thats not new, the 3.0d does it as well. You can get a blanking plate to completely remove them from the engine.

The Mercedes 3.0 V6 is rife with issues in connection with swirl flaps nothing new but in Merc's case it is a "strip the entire top off the engine" job
