    Thumbs down PC Nightmare!

Oh guys i'm having a PC nightmare on my home computer.

It was working fine then i turned it off, went out, came back and booted it and then it tells me that the config/system file is missing or corrupted.

Tells me that i can use the XP startup disk to attempt a repair but as my computer came pre installed, i can't find the disk, can't remember if i got one with it after scrambling around in the loft looking for it!

So having dug around it looks like i will have to source a setup disk. Hopefully one of the guys at work should have one...

I don't want to format the hard drive as i have the kids pictures on there and alot of music files.

you shouldn't have to as it will give you the option to boot from CD if you go into the BIOS.. this will then let you access the windows CD to repair the Config.sys file..

    Got a decent virus killer/firewall??

    PLEASE don't tell me norton..

Don't have config.sys and more buddy been replaced.

Get hold of an XP CD either home or pro and put it in the CD drive reboot the computer and press any key when prompted after the BIOS screen.

Wait until you are given options and choose Repair a Windows installation. It will go to something that looks like a DOS prompt. It will ask you to select a windows installation. By default press 1 then enter. It will also ask you for your administrator password. If you don't know it try pressing enter as many are set blank from factory.

Once at the C:\> Prompt type the following:

    chkdsk c: /f /r

Press enter and leave the computer. Can take quite a while. Leave the XP cd in. This will restore any system files.

Once complete type in the following:

    fixboot

Then press enter. Agree to any prompts.

Reboot. If it still doesn't work go back into Repair Windows Installation and at the prompt type in:

    fixmbr

    Then enter and reboot

If that STILL doesnt work post on here

    HTH!

Nice one John, was going to suggest a disc check, but you beat me too it lol. If following those instructions don't work then it's serious trouble I would think. Had a friends do this to me recently, repaired the mbr and it still wouldn't go, chucked it in mine and ran a scan, drive was almost dead from fried sectors. Managed to back up all of his important stuff and binned the drive.

Turned out that he ALWAYS uses the power button to turn the computer off, not even the 'soft off' just press-whack-needle in platter-fried disc. Pratt. He now knows different.

To be honest...I had similar problems...and after doing the "repairs" with the setup disk...works for a while but in my opinion is better to format the hole thing up.....I do it once a year to keep my machine as it should....ofcourse is kind of a pain in the neck to do it but I think is worth it.....try to get a second HD and start making backups on it...keep your OS and programs in one HD and files on the second.....life gets easy that way mate.

I tend to build a pc up, get everything working then ghost it to a secondary partition... that way... when it all goes wrong, it can be restored without reloading the whole thing again... all ya need then is any xp updates which doesnt usually take too long and saves shed loads of hours!

    Cheers for the advice,

So far i have managed to acquire an XP pro disc as mine didn't come with anything grrrrr...

Anyway i took it home but forgot the DOS instructions i had pulled off the net. I will print this thread and take it home with me to try.

I think that as it may happen again, i will burn all my pics and music to DVD and then when it does happen i will do a format. I have pictures of my kids from birth on there and over 85 albums.

Funny that i was only thinking about backing the files up to DVD two days ago
