    Default Inches from disaster

I went to pick up the fiancee last night and on my way I had a near miss with one of these on Marsh Mills roundabout.
    Attachment 35580
There are numerous lanes that go round, but he was in the left lane at the traffic lights and as we went round the rounabout, he cut into my lane, making me break (HARD) and for once I managed to hold my horn down. I was watching him in his wing mirror and he looked at me, didn't move or flinch and decided to keep coming over into my lane. I can tell you I was ****ing livid . As I didn't want to fight with a 7.5 tonne horse coach (and more than likely lose), I just left him to it.

to be honest at any roundabout if there is an artic going round it in any lane, i just sit back and let him go

how many times have i seen them cut a lane ( not deliberatley ) but purely due to the size and turning ability of the vehicle + their large blindspot ----- many a person has had a nasty surprise

i'd go as so far to say that this info should be in the highway code

And yes you would come off worse.

once your clear of the round about then thats the time to make progress

    cheers

I trust proper HGV drivers and always stay behind them in a turn due to their size, but this lorry didn't come into my lane by an inch or two, he came into my lane and continued to do so whilst I was beeping him. It was either hit the lorry, brake hard or mount the curb

It is. Rules 187 and 221.

187 relates specifically (yet in part) to long vehicles and roundabouts and 221 relates to large vehicles requiring extra space to turn or to deal with hazards.

There's a discussion about the Highway Code in this very forum.

Trouble is most horsebox drivers like "Jordon" etc.
Only have car licences, think if you held a full
licence prior to 88 then you are entitled to drive
    them.
And they are more concerned with their goods then the road.

i suspected it would be in there but i don't have a copy...

    so thats good clarification

and given some of these creatures will be worth more than our cars.... then i'm not surprised they take of their loads

that doesn't necessitate though that they run you off the road.

to be honest in days gone by i would have taken the number and let the police know

but i got run off on a roundabout when it was my right of way, the truck entered the roundabout at speed from my left and it was clear that if i carried on he would impact into my n/s and squash me into a bridge pillar. so i drove onto the central grass part of the roundabout and got stuck

he drove off after going round the roundabout to make sure what he had done

then 5 mins later the police came by. they stopped and asked why i was parked on the roundabout and didn't i know that wasn't a place to park.

well by now i was bogged down

so after explaining to them what had happened, i asked them if they would tow me 1 yard to get at least 1 drive wheel onto the tarmac. They said no..

so 1 hour later green flag ( i WAS a member ) turned up and demanded £50 as i was off road....... by this point i was livid as you can imagine. I explained i was only off road due to the reckless nature of the truck and declined to pay. In the end after a standoff and me ringing Green Flag Head office, he finally towed me off...

so now you know why i'm so careful around big trucks

    cheers

You do now as I've posted a link to the DfT's online version, above. Subject to disclaimer, but it's generally good enough for online discussion.

We don't carry two-ropes where I work, can't speak for other forces, but I doubt *many* do. Perhaps some traffic cars or in very rural areas, but even then it's doubtful IMO, for a number of reasons.

That said, unless I was going to an emergency, I don't see why it would be unreasonable to get out and give you a push (unless your car was genuinely stuck axle-deep in mud) off; I've done that before with broken-down cars, just to get them out of the main carriageway. It can be done safely but sometimes requires more than one police vehicle or person to put the appropriate signals and fends in place (and to push the car!)

If it's unsafe to get out, then I'd guess it would be equally unsafe to leave the car in situ,

No mate, don't do that - you'll live longer if you distrust them. How many times do you see a car in the middle lane of a motorway and then a HGV in the left lane indicates once and instantly starts to pull out, right into the path of the car - and all so he can overtake another truck that's doing 1 mph less than he is. Their attitiude towards cars is "either move or get squashed", and all just because they don't like losing momentum.
