    Default Alternator or Battery?

The car died today. Got it started via jump leads and checked the voltage (11.49), when revving the engine, this would raise to approx 11.85.

I did the headlight test (see if the headlight dims or brightens when revving) and the lights stayed bright throught.

I then did a test by removing the Positive cable with the engine running. The car stalled when this happened. The car however would stay alive if being revved once the terminal was removed.

    Any ideas?

P.S - Once jump started, the car got me home approx 20 miles away.. and even then I could turn off and start the car 3 times.

Sounds like your alternator is definitely on the way out. It should charge at about 12.8v minimum and up to 13.8 unloaded. Look like it's still giving enough to just keep most things running but it wont for long.

    Damn :/

Is there any sure way to check?

    Also.. would a Alternator from a Vectra C 2.0 DTI (2003) fit my Vectra C 1.9 CDTI? (55Reg Diesel).

    Thanks.

as ian says the alternator should be between 13 - 14 volts when engine running and i doubt a dti alternator would fit

Local autofactors will usually test it for free

Maybe breakers yard or reconditioned 1

Had the alternator fail on my other Vec about two weeks ago (just as I was trying to sell the car as well). Cost me £160 from Halfords after the exchange refund.

Just the lights. The car would stay on while revving but would die shortly after releasing the rev's.
