What size wheel/tyre will fit in boot

hello all
after having to use my emergency spare a few weeks ago i have decided to get a bigger wheel as a spare as the car drove really bad with it on and i was a long way from home.
what is the biggest wheel and tyre i can fit into the spare wheel well?
i have 215/50/17 tyres on the car i think that will be a bit too big,

I have had a spare 17" alloy with 215/50 in the boot,you just need to take out the plastic ring I have a spare SRi twinspoke alloy with a 215/45 on it, ideal for a spare, would sell it for £50 + courier if you are interested ??

I bought 3 steel wheels off Carlbear to use as spares and have junked the spacesavers on our two cars and my dad's cdti..

after seeing the result of a puncture on Duncan's car at the essex meet, i thought that i didn't want mrs GSi to be in the position where she couldn't get home at speed, or travel a long distance... so i've swapped..

I had a 17" spare as well before I sold the set

an 18" wheel should fit as well, as mine are almost the same overall size (with the lower profile tyres) as the standard 17" sri alloys, mibbie going more than 18" would be a problem though
