Don't like the sound of that,2k for a recon auto box at dealers
to check the fluid level to make sure the box is full up,you need to take out the little torx screw on the bottom of the gearbox, and if fluid starts coming out, your box should be fairly full up,there is a sequence to do it,but i'm not 100% sure how to do it.

Hi Ricky. Its quite a complicated job getting the level right on the AF40 transmission and it would be better if you could beg borrow or steal a Haynes manual and read all about it .
    (Page 7b3)

The oil level is indicator is part of the drain plug

As a rough guide I believe the level checking is close to :

Vehicle on level surface (with access to drain plug)

Car running and up to normal temperature

Foot on brake and keep it there, handbrake on, select each transmission position for a couple of secs each.... P to 1 then back to P

Car at idle (securely chocked and safety person to hand where possible, remove drain plug... fluid should be at the lower edge of the drain plug hole.

Fluid should also be lovely rich pink colour .... if not enough fluid or dirty/dark in colour, consider a filter and fluid change.

Although I have heard talk on later auto transmissions of a check plug as part of the drain plug.
