    Default Dead vectra

Hi, registered as a newby some 4 weeks ago when I picked up my Vectra. Its been standing all this time, so yesterday I jumped in and turned the key.

There was a clicking noise, then the lights on the dassh went all disco on me. After a few more turns of the key the clicking stopped and so did the central locking. So I took the battery out to check and closed it manually.

Battery back in this morning - it was ok but I gave it a good charge regardless. Popped it back in its place, all the eletrics including the central locking A OK - but nothing from the ignition key, not even the clicking noise.

I'm thinking the clicking was the starter motor dying and thsat it now needs as new started motor? Any pointers would be more than welcomed, dissapointed as hell thast I csnt use her.....not tried jumping her yet though

    thanks

    Dylan

Could and probably is a duff battery - try jump leads

It's a 3.2 so it will take alot of power to crank it over. If it wont turn over when connected with jump leads then started could be faulty so fix it like the aa do and hit it with a hammer

if you suspect its just a faulty starter try bump starting it, as a jump start wont make any difference if the battery is ok

If mines stood for a while unlocked it doesn't turn over... Maybe it was just that?

    Hi all

New heavy duty battery arrived today and it went straight into the car - could see straight away that the original battery was not the right type - was to small!

Anyway battery went in and after a quick jump start the v6 fired up - so big thanks all for calming my nerves re this new car.

Spent the day trying it out and I have to say its a great car to drive - brought a smile to my face on numerous occasions - had forgotten how much I enjoy that v6 growl - probably helped by the K&N panel filter!

Just ordered new rear parcel shelf and about to pull out the radio to check for serial number so that I can get it out of safe mode.

I have plans to modify this car in the future - looking forward to being part of the club.

    thanks again

    Dylan

Honey moons over lol. Take the family out in the Vectra today, about 5 mins into the 20 min journey the speedo, rev counter and temp/petrol gauge all swith off and the battery light comes on.

At this stage the car's still driving fine so I do the best thing you can do in this situation - thud to the dashboard ala' fist.....but no joy. Park up in car park and turn the engine off hoping this would re-set or re boot the instruments. But it doesn't and worse still the car doesn't start - completely dead again.

So I call the AA and wait two hours...trying to keep my 2 year old entertained!...........guy turns up tests the battery, checks all the fuses and runs out of ideas...he was a nice man though...very nice (sorry couldn't resist)

I know the battery is OK so we agree to jump start it, but no joy while raising the clutch. Then as soon as car comes to a standstill (it goes backwards a bit before it actually stops) I try (in desperation now) to start it again and it fires up - all clocks working fine.

Relieved to get it started - you bet......but lost confidence a bit and wife wont use it now.

Would be really grateful for any ideas as to what would cause the instruments to fail (fuses are OK)

Ive jumped started the car twice now, on both occasions it didn't start on the first attempt, but when the car was towed of pushed backwards it started without jumping. Ive read somewhere that sticky starters will work if you 'rock the car backwards and forwards' so I'm hoping Ive got a sticky starter motor.....which would be straight enough to sort if I could get to is lol

More worried about the dash going dead......

Joy of new car ownership lol

    Cheers

    Dylan
