    Default rear caliper/piston problems

    hi guys

hoping you can please help, ive been trying to change the rear pads on my 04 CDTI estate, ive got the caliper off and pads in, the problem ive got is i cant wind the piston back in, it only goes about 4 turns then goes solid.

ive managed to remove it and it all looks fine, its not cross threaded etc etc, ive tried it numerous times and it just keeps turning around 4 turns the sticking fast, and the only way i can get it back out again is to pull the handbrake on a couple of times then its loose.

please can you help as ive been at it all day and im really worried that ive ruined it.

    thanks

ok slight update, i managed to get the piston in a short way, about as far as it was when i removed the caliper to take the old pads out.

i put the seal back on and put the old pads back on, put it all back together.

now when i drive it i have to pump the brake pedal to get it to stop.and after a few more seconds its to the floor again, and again needs pumping to stop.

have i totally screwed the brake caliper and thats why its not holding pressure? or do i have to bleed the brakes, if so can i do it without any specialist tools?

    thanks

it sounds like you should bleed your brakes before you try anything else, see what its like after that, if you still have issues let us know.

On some rear callipers (Not sure on the Vectra) there is a handbrake adjuster which is a allen headed bold behind a plastic cap (Directly behind the piston so onlt seen from under the car).

On these callipers you need to undo the allen head bolt then wind the piston back in.

    small update guys

ive bitten the bullet and delivered the car to a local ex vauxhall technician this morning.

i didnt feel confident in carrying on with the work myself, with the fact that my missus mainly drives the car with our 3 children in it, its just not worth their safety.

he said all being well i should have it back in a few days, so i can update once its back with the diagnosis.

    thanks for the help guys

cars back from the tech, cost me the sum of £40.

luckily, he stripped the caliper back, took it all apart, cleaned it and re-assembled it and it was ok, managed to wind it back in properly, new pads on, re-connected, all bled up and it now stops fine.

the pedal was still a bit spongy when i picked it up, but im guessing thats due to the pads bedding into the old discs.

really pleased, and relieved that it wasnt a major **** up on my part, and cant thank the bloke enough who did the work, he's a great chap, if anyone needs a mechanic near bradford/halifax would deffo reccomend him.
