    Default 235/40/18

Has anybody put 235/40/18 tyres on Penta rims?
Apparently they are 7.5J so apparently the maximum width of tyre is 225 to keep the tyre walls vertical.
Go wider than 225 and the walls start to lean out and puts more stress on the tyre and apparently handling suffers.

I've Penta's on at the minute and need to change all 4 tyres and it has been suggested that 235/40/18 is a better size for the vectra but from what I read it's maybe not a good idea and I should stay with 225/40/18

    Any comments anyone.

No but I was told that 235's need to be on an 8 inch rim so it could be true.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

It is true, the critical aspect is the profile to width ratio. it is far easier to get a wider tyre onto a narrower rim if the sidewall is far taller as the 235/7.5 combo will stress the breakover point on the tread and lead to wear and carcase damage unseen eventually.
I have seen this first-hand and it can be a little dangerous.

Why not try 225/45's? Your speedo will only be marginally out and IMO the wheels don't look too small like they do with 40's.

    He's on about 235/40's not 225/40's.

I know I'm just suggesting an alternative for him.

But what you suggested was that the side wall of all 40 profiles are the same height and they are not. The sidewall of a 235/40 is bigger than the side wall of a 225/40 as its a percentage of the tyre width. So they won't look too small like with the 225/40's can do.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Think you misunderstood me, I just meant 225/40's can make 18"s look small. I understand about sidewall heights. I was just offering a. Alternate size as he couldn't fit 235/40's. I had some 18"s with 225/45's on and they looked great but when I bought new tyres I put 225/40's on which looked small but yeah 225/40's are fine.
