They are different but i doubt you will notice. Its all down to personal preference.

Noticed you forgot about the green cotton ones.

I haved the K&N filter which is made of fine mesh which is oil coated while the Pipercross is foam ( I think ). I would go for the K&N as its a better filter and its what just about everyone goes for despite the price.

Both free flow but pipercross foam, if I remember correctly. I prefer K & N but personal choice.

Its guaranteed and lasts for ever subject to proper cleaning etc which you use the cleaning kit. It just seems to be the 1st name in filters but why not try one of the others and prove it wrong, you might cause a stampede for Pipercross / Green filters.

I have done, Had a couple of K&N's - both panel and 57i's on Calibras and an Astra Gte, unbranded from ebay on my Vec 3.2, Green cotton on my 3.0V6 cdti that came out of a 3.2 and a pipercross on a old sierra. Can't say I noticed any difference accross any of them. Well apart from the price.

What about you? Or is it just down to the advertising blurb? Most of these filters can be cleaned and re-oiled.

Yes nearly, the 1.6's (not many of these about) and early 1.8's are smaller. I also believe the 2.8t may be different.
