    Default Vectra scrapped

    Hi,

My vectra was kindly smashed into by a Traveller in a tow truck, its looking likely to be written off so im wondering what to go for next. I would NEVER buy another cdti after the hassle ive had with it, but i like vauxhalls, so are there any vauxhalls with consistently good diesel engines? I need a decent sized car to get the family in but i cant have another car as problematic as my 56 plate vec sri 150, any advice would be welcome, even if its dont buy a vauxhall! ;-)

Sorry to hear that mate... and i think there is less hassle with the 3.0 V6 and possibly the DTI's but you cant tune them much...

I have never come across an entirely reliable engine, no matter what manufacturer
The petrols are fine up to about 80K miles
The diesels should be fine up to about 120K miles

If you have had problems in the first 3 years / 60K miles then it should have been dealt with under warranty
Once you are out of warranty then it is likely parts will fail under wear and tear

What age of car did you buy and what age you are you looking at now?

As for the 1.9 CDTI from memory it is not a VX manufactured engine, hence why most "mechanics" simply hope it has a fault code they can fix
It was the same with my V6 CDTI, "no fault codes found", although how they expect to diagnose a mechanical fault with a piece of software makes one wonder...

I've heard from my mechanic that apparently French diesels are the best at the moment, even beating the Germans.

Personally I don't like French cars, but the likes of VW, Audi etc would get my vote.

****** hate travellers in transits hauling their rubbish about. A mate of mine had some knock on his door offering to buy some scrap copper in his back garden he had stripped out from doing his house up. God knows how they knew it was there, he said no as he was taking it to the local scrappy the next day - it was nicked the next day

Good luck with the new car though, do your research on the forums, honest john etc

2.0 or 2.2DTi if you want engine reliability. They should last 200k without much work on the engine.

3.0CDTi if you want engine power and reliability. Those usually last 300k (some not even 20k ) and then die. Cylinder liner failure. But 300k is a car's life so you shouldn't have issues with the engine so long it's serviced properly and treated nicely.

These are typically engines from the PSA group (owned by Peugoet Citreon)
They appear in many other manufacturers cars, including Ford
Generally they are very reliable engines, but when they go wrong it's time to get your blankety blank cheque book out
Their original engines (normally aspirated non-turbo) were bomb proof although the service intervals were ridiculously low (typically 4.5K to 8K miles)

If I was a mod on here, I'd consider deleting the word from this and other threads.
    Dave,

the term as deleted was in discussion with other mods who as you appreciate are not online 24/7 and having discussed the matter was removed from this thread
