Default SXi vs SRi? Or Vectra vs Astra?

May seem a stupid question to most of you, but i have a good reason for asking.

I own a vectra SRi 07 plate, my friend owns a Astra SXi 06 plate.

I went in his car to take his ballasts out from his HID kit, and noticed theres alot more features in his astra then my vectra, one what impressed me the most was the pneumatic pump which lifts and holds the bonnet up.

And as overly jealous as i was, got me wondering if the SXi vauxhall models come with more features such as the pneumatic bonnet, or are vectras built less exquit then the astras?

    Yep, only preface.

Facelift bonnets are too weak for gas struts.

How are they too weak, I thought the only major difference between preface and face lift was the headlight cluster.

The earlier bonnets also formed part of the radiator grill. This bend in the bonnet added strength to it. The facelift bonnets are basically a flat piece of metal. You can add an incredible amount of strength to metal if you put bends in the right places. That and also I believe preface bonnets had steel cross members and an alloy skin, whereas the facelift cross members are also alloy - or so as I've previous read on this forum.

Not sure how having two gas struts would put more strain than holding it up with a single rod.

The Vectra seems an odd car in many ways to me. Its primary rival and the car it will be compared to most would be the Mk3 Mondeo. Initial impression is that the Vectra has better build quality, the doors feel heavy and solid in comparison with the Mondeo. The Fiat CDTi engine is more refined than the Ford TDCi etc. These things give an air of greater class. However things like the lack of gas struts on the bonnet and the generally lower levels of toys give the opposite impression. Both Mondeo's I owned were low trim versions and yet both were better specced in terms of toys etc than the SRi Vectra which is supposed to be a mid trim. My mother-in-law has a pre-face Signum Design and even it is very basic (other than part leather seats).

However I enjoy driving the Vectra now a lot more than the Mondeo because of the 150bhp v 115. I like the look of the car (altough I wish it was black). However I really do think that VX would have sold more if they had specced them to match equivalent priced Mondeos.

Don't want to upset any current astra owner that may be on here but the spec list on the astra is pretty pathetic compared to its vectra equivalent. Could be wrong but I think the only astras that came with cruise control as standard were the Elite/VXR. Where as nearly every vec has it.

As mentioned the Vec facelifts bonnet is too weak for gas struts. For most careful owners this wouldn't be a problem (having the strut) but for rough owners the bonnet would mearly twist/bend

The prefacelift bonnet is a steel skeleton with an aluminium panel/skin. The facelift bonnet is an aluminium skeleton with aluminium skin - that's why it's weaker.
