Default Over a month and have heard nothing

Hi you may remember me posting about how I had driven off from a Police/DVA road block that wanted to clamp my Vectra on the way home from buying it because it was not taxed. I registered and taxed the car the very next morning (as I had always intended to do). Kept expecting to hear something once they had my name/address, but so far nothing. Got the new registration document about 3 days after I had registered and taxed the car at county hall, so I am on their system.

No need to remind me that technically I was breaking the law by driving home without tax, I know that, but I will always object to over inforcing such regulations. When I taxed the car it was effectively taxed back to the start of August, plus I still had a week of tax left on my last car which was no longer on the road, so while yes technically I was in the wrong I feel morally I was in the right

That was a lucky break William, I don't think you would have nearly as much leeway in the UK as plod see these activities as a great way to boost crime solved stat's

I feel I was right to break what is effectively an unjust law. Given that they do not offer 24hr service at the car tax office and they insist you pay from the start of the given month (ie I had to pay for the whole of August on a car collected on the 23rd), and they don't allow you to actually tax a car before you collect it as you have to have the reg document etc, I feel that you should have at least a 2 week grace period. No way in past years a traffic cop would have taken action in the circumstances I was in. Twas just bloddy mindedness on the part of the DVA monkey.

There is a rethink needed on this subject. I fully agree.

If you go buy a new car, espically from a dealship or garage the car should be able to be driven away un-taxed.

There should be a database to see that the car has been recently bought to stop people driving without tax continually.

I will admitt to driving a untaxed vechicle waiting for the databases to update themselves then i just tax it online.

Why? Because he was doing his job?

first thing, are you sure the car was not taxed? a lot of dealers will send the disc off a trade in to dvla and pocket the refund, I feel they will have checked if you taxed the car, apart from the driving off thing, you were only guilty of failure to display. good luck to ya I say.

This is the method in the USA, you buy a car it is given a temporary plate that covers tax and registration as long as you are insured and have shown your policy to the dealer, you drive away.

We need a similar provision of a 24-48 hour pass for new purchases, however, in Williams case I suspect that a background check and updated tax records would have put their case to a close as it was clear he couldn't physically tax the car.

Were it me though, I would not have driven the car until it was taxed as my luck would have had me ANPR'd siezed charged and confiscated

Though you have to display a valid tax disk, no good having one sat indoors on the kitchen table.
