    Default Quick power steering question

On the power steering rack should the gaitors have fluid behind them or are they just to protect the seals from debris?

The reason I ask is that my near side gaitor has a split in it and I do seem to have devolped a leak. So was just wondering can I just replace the gaitor or is it replacement rack time?

There shouldn't be any PS fluid in there, they're as you say, dust boots basically. You can get repair kits, or you used to be able to, dunno if thats changed now. Worth asking the Q at the dealer.

    Cheers guys.

I feared that would be the case! Is it much of a job to change the rack. I just want to get an idea on labour costs.

the gaitors are there to protect the parts inside , but they are full of grease

yes you can get new kits to replace them and they come with a sachet of grease in them to refill it

not a difficult job to be honest , check them first before getting a new rack

Thanks Mark, I think I will give that a try first before replacing the rack.

no probs , hope it saves you money

just one bit of advise if the kit comes with cable ties to hold it on , bin them and buy jubilee clamps in the correct size as they hold the gaitor on better and you can get a better seal thus preventing leaks
