    Default Mazda RX8 PZ

What do you all think of the special edition Mazda RX8 PZ ?. I've just seen it advertised and checked out the website. I'm well impressed but haven't read any reviews. Also what about vs the Astra VXR (the Mazda is £26k)

I like the look of the prodrive fettled PZ but i do think that the rotary engine takes some getting used to as it revs very freely without much in the way of torque. Also you have to check and top up the oil very regularly, and if you still have it at around 65k then you may have to get the rotor tips replaced, not a cheap job by any stretch of the imagination.

Having said that, i think the RX8 is a convincing package and thousands would agree.

I don't know anything at all about the VXR except it looks wicked

I looked at a mazda RX8 when I bought the astra vxr, it isn`t very useful in that it is a 4 seater and the back seats are useless anyway, I set the drivers seat to fit me and tried to ge in the back, couldn`t fit !! The boot is tiny, about the size of a mini boot and I have read the engines go bang and they use heaps of oil, also the one I was looking at was an ex demo and the alloys had signs of corrosion around the centre cap so I looked at a couple of used ones in the forecourt and they were worse, really bedly corroded ... You need to get full leather to make the inside look decent but I guess the spec ed will have that.

The Astra VXR, stunning car, my only gripe with it is that the boot isn`t huge and reversing you need to use the mirrors as rear vision ain`t great, apart from that, Comfy, Verrrry fast, Handles like it`s on rails, good fuel economy far what you get, looks stunning, especially on 19`s, huge tuning potential, cheap insurance (so far), oh, and it`s verrrrry fast !!!

So between the 2 I went for the VXR, for me the RX8 just wasn`t practical, and the rear doors are for show, it`s just a 2 door !!

RX8 drinks like a fish and needs the oil checking every second fill up. This isn't helped by the positioning of the dipstick, which ensures you're likely to get dirty all the time.

I'm not keen, oil use, engine only powerful if you thraip it, reliability.

A step back in these respects.

More development & maybe it would be a sensible option in future.

I think Top Gear magazine did a review of the new RX8 PZ. IIRC they weren't that impressed with the PZ over the standard RX8. Liked the design tweeks, but, dynamically it didn't offer a great deal more for the price hike. Looks nice though and itv-f1 are giving one away. Can't remember when the competition closes think it might be next week.

    As lifted from Autotrader:

"With a price tag of £25,995, £3695 more than the standard car, the coupe comes with a tweaked suspension system developed by motor sport company Prodrive. The suspension revisions have been designed, Mazda says, to make the car ride and handle better while cornering.

The special edition also has a new rear spoiler, front and rear mesh grilles, 18-inch alloy OZ Racing wheels and leather seats.

The RX-8 PZ is powered by the same 228bhp rotary engine fitted in the highest-powered standard model, but will sound slightly different because of a new silencer."

thanks for the reviews and info. Looks like the VXR Astra would be the best option. Have to say that the back seats of the RX8 are nowhere near as spacious as the Astra and those rear doors are a gimmick given the size of the back. cheers,
