Default URGENT help required. Put petrol in Deisel engine

Any one advice me on what to do....I just put 3 litres of petrol in an almost empty diesel engine and wondered if I can fill the tank up to the top with diesel and 'get away' with causing no damage? Any one ever done this?
The car is at the moment blocking the forecourt of my local garage so quick responses would be very gratefully received !

Fill it with diesel and hope for best...

Back in the day i think they used to add a couple of litres of petrol to thin the diesel....

Wouldnt risk it, phone a recovery service to remove the petrol from the tank.

As long as you havent started it push it back to the pump and brim it right up with diesel before starting it,

Just found this so ignore above... as in my comment lol

Depends on what type of engine you have fitted.

If it is a a'common rail' diesel then do Not run the engine as even a small amount of petrol will destroy the high pressure electronic injectors.

If it is one of the older type diesels, neat petrol will destroy the fuel pump seals and damage the injectors, BUT as you have a mixture that is mostly diesel, the wax lubricants are still in the system which will protect both pump and injectors.

Only you know how much petrol you have put in, if you are confident of the percentages quoted then you can still run the engine without any problems, just dont make it work too hard.

Worst scenario is drain what you can from the fuel tank and refill with fresh diesel, and bleed the fuel up to the pump - there is no need to flush the system unless a common rail system is used.

Although other sites have said if its less then 10% petrol it should be ok?!?!?!

Cheers everyone, just been on the AA website and they state :-

If you've added less than 10% petrol (5 litres in a 50 litre tank) – Top up with diesel and run normally unless the manufacturer has advised otherwise

    SO.......should I trust that advice?

As above fill the tank & keep it topped up too for a few fills after... you're well within that spec above..

my dad tried running my old vec b dti on pure petrol it didnt like it a lot lol!.... Drained the fuel filter filled it with diesel, filled the diesel tank with 25litres and all ok, except where the tank was rusty and the derv was keeping it sealed the petrol cleaned it out and made it leak lol..... the mix was roughly 5litres derv left in tank and 5litres petrol... so a 50% mix
