    Default 1.8 Gearbox Cost?

Following another thread, my car now grinds like a ******* the faster I go. Garage who did the cambelt refused to look at the gearbox until I got new tyre's (couldn't test drive it) and now a week later after being messed around by my local tyre dealer, it whines badly in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Need a recon box and i've just had a quote for £1200 to do the box and clutch, I simply cannot afford this. I was expecting closer to £600, not over a grand!

    What should I be paying?

Might as well do the clutch at the same time so another £50

Even if you have to get a garage to fit it id think it would be well under £600. Of course there is no guarantee with a second hand box unlike a recon one, but tbh unless its been thrashed to death I would still expect a gearbox to be good for 150k these days, at the very least.

Is it something you could do yourself? GB change isn't technically difficult, just a bit awkward, and you need suitable facilities.

If it is, most breakers will offer some sort of a warranty on them.

^^ No don't have the facility to do it, im tempted to go buy a recon and get another garage to fit it whilst changing the clutch...... I could swear the gearbox has to be disconnected from drive shafts etc to change the clutch, so it shouldn't be much of an additional job???

Oh noes, now it's getting stuck in reverse gear :/

It turns out that gearbox/clutch are the same procedure, so im gonna try getting a clutch quote and then asking if (for a nominal fee) they'll simply fit my new box instead of the old one.
Just have to get hold of a the gearbox and im sorted..... Maybe!

Appreciate the info above btw, i'd only consider a non-recon box if I could be sure of it's condition

I recon you looking at about £800 for recon box and clutch , try and get the vat off for a cash deal, you will still get your 2 yr warranty.

Whilst the gearbox is off, I would seriously consider replacing the release at the same time. Unless it has been replaced recently....

Odds on that when it has all been rebuilt, the 'slave' will go, and cost a lot to replace as the GB has to come off again.
