    Default Removing the common rail...

... to do the manifold swirl rod mod - what do I need to do?! Not wanting to just unbolt it without asking first. Do I need to de-pressurise the system or what?!

Don't go near it m8, the manifold is removable without touching the fuel system at all or the timing belt. Leave it alone mate is my warning, as the pressure of the fuel can severe limbs or end in a fatality should it escape.

Check the how2 m8, I think long pliers were used. If it is not completely off it may be jammed on one of the swirl pots. Tbh it's new manifold time.

If you have a full service history they may contribute something but they may not - you can only ask m8. Good luck.
