Vectra Dashboard warning light (car with a spanner over lapping it)

Recently on a morning I have been starting up my Vectra C 2.0DTI 53 plate, and on the dashboard is showing warning icon.

The icon is a car with a spanner over lapping it.

The service manual advises that it is an engine electronic or transmision problem. The icon only shows for a few minutes then dissapears.

Is there any way I can find out what is causing this dashboard light without paying a garage to put it on a diagnostic machine.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have found a How2 for "Read Fault Codes For Free and Without any Equipment".

It is a function that is started by using your accelerator and brake pedals in a certain sequence.

Have not tried it yet but I plan on trying it soon.

I have the same light on when I am starting the car but as soon as it is started, the light goes out straight away.

I have the same problem - Just changed my glow plugs, next day I went and moved my car from my garage to the drive and light didn't come on! This was great until when I took it out for a drive later that day and as soon as I started it up the light came back

On a brighter note it only does it when the car is cold now

im having the same problem, i changed the glow plugs and then it didnt come on from cold but now if for example i take it for a little drive first thing in the morning (no light) then pull over for an hour or so it then comes on?? any help would be great

My problem turned out to be I had faulty glow plugs and my boost pipes had split! replacement pipe been put in and glows changed and the problem has now gone!
