Default V6 CDTi reading error codes

    Chaps,

I'm getting the spanner light coming on randomly, around once a week.
    Switching ignition off clears it.

I spotted the 'pedal trick' on the forum to read the error code , but doesn't seem to do anything. Can someone confirm if it is supposed to work with this engine.
Would just like some idea of what the fault is before taking it to the dealer

    Ta.

The engine warning light has to be on for the pedal trick to work, as I found out by testing with the MAF sensor disconnected

Are you sure it is the engine warning light, and not the service light?
The service light will briefly appear when there are less than 1000 miles to next service
Once you are below 500 miles it stays on all the time
It looks like a can with a spanner through it

It's definitely the EML light. Car with Spanner through the middle of it.

As the light goes away when the Ignition is switched off, not sure how I can do the pedal thing while the Light is present?

Do I switch the Ignition off, and try the pedal trick immediately before it resets?

Just to be sure I'm talking about this 'trick'

If the EML warning is coming on all the time, then it should be stored
If the EML warning stops coming on, then it is typically deleted after the ignition has been restarted several times

Therefore, switch the engine on, and get the EML warning light to appear
Then proceed to the pedal test

However, not all cars do it, mine doesn't either
I disconnected the MAF sensor which reports a fault code
However the pedal test returned nothing
Ironically on the next visit to the dealership they advised there was an old fault code stored which they had cleared

    Vehicle : Jaguar XF 3.0D V6

The warning light (either MIL or Car with spanner) do not have to be illuminated for the process to return fault codes.

It only works for some cars, but mine currently has a P1565 Stored (cruise control), but neither of the warning are on or have been on at any time. The car is also operating correctly - including cruise control.

If it doesn't work on your car, buying a cheap code reader may be cheaper than going to the dealer.....

Bought a U480 off Ebay as suggested , but it doesn't read any error codes.

Plugged in , when EML light showing and Scan shows 'No Codes'
    Any ideas?
It's a 2003 model, pre facelift, should the codes be able to be read?

Guess it'll have to go to a dealer/specialist to be checked out.

Can anyone recommend somewhere which has experience of this Engine anywhere in Herts/Bed/North London area.

Lost confidence in the usual place that services it after they completely cocked up the Cam Belt replacement @ the last service.

U480 works perfectly well on my 2004 half canbus V6 diesel.

I have a U480 also, works on my facelift V6 diesel, some of the codes clear when the ignition is turned off, the best way to check is to stop the engine but do not remove the key and then plug the reaser in.
I recently had an EGR issue and the code was never stored if I removed the keys, try that, it may help.
