Drilled and grooved?

A while ago I posted a thread about how crap the stock brakes are on my 2.2dti sri and was pointed in the direction of this ebay seller. Im about to make the purchase but whilst booking a service I asked the garage (just a small garage down the road) if they would fit them at the same time. They said yes but have told me not to expect them to be any better than stock ones and the only way to get better braking is to completely upgrade the braking with bigger discs etc..

Is this true? I know people are using these drilled and grooved discs and wondered if you noticed any real difference over stock parts?

the info they gave you basically correct, you will probably not notice any difference in day to day driving, you may notice a difference if you are booting it about as disks get hotter braking performance decreases, with drilled and/or grooved they are supposed to cool quicker and therefore help you brake under tougher conditions (i.e. racing). However they do look better on a car and the Mtec disk are almost the same price as stock disk from VX. just don't by cheap disks to save a piund or two as these are what stop you and some cheapos are known to wear out in no time.

A brake pro will come along soon enough and give more precise info though.. My info on this is just what i have been lead to believe and is not gospel..

First of all don't get drilled discs,they crack,just do an internet search !,but grooved discs do work,but only under extremes,i.e.,very heavy braking or in the rain,they allow the gases or water to escape from between the surface of the disc and pad,but as as a downside you sometimes get more dust and an increase in noise,i've got that sellers grooved discs on the Jag,and i've had no problems,HTH.

Get some Stock Rotors, and upgrade the pads. You should notice greater bite during day to day driving.

well my normal brakes must have been well ****ed because i replaced them with drilled and grooved ones and they are so much better than the standard gm ones,and i don't drive aggressively

i would say i noticed a difference in braking especially in the wet, but some may say thats probably a plecebo effect..

Ultimately they are better, but as everyone says if you just want a bit more bite just get some stock discs and some EBC pads....

Had a few sets of MTEC drilled and grooved...

Last one was on my astra for 4 years, no cracking or warpping so forget the scare stories. got them on the vectra now and the braking is better but compared to an upgrade i wouldn't know... But they look mint so...............


ONLY thing i would advise is get your OWN decent pads, just buy the discs. Not saying MTEC ones a crap but some pads i've had have been rubbish. needing to change my fronts now because of brake squeel....

I'm also running the Mtec drilled&grooved discs and find them to be good. I used preditor pads instead on the one's mtec supply which work really well..

Only prob i find with this set-up is the brake dust is a little more than usual.
