Default Oil/Filter Change at National Tyres, My Experience

    Hi Peeps,

On reading a few notes and words of advice on these here very useful forums decided to give National Tyres a try for a Oil/Filter change, simple right...

On Friday decided to give them ago, went it, nothing exciting to report apart from the look of a distressed fitter when he popped the bonnet, a mere 10mins later, they have found a brand new tack (no wear) in the newish rear tyre, being told, it cant be repaired to its location to the side wall, quote to replace £161 for an avon ZV5. Hmmmmmmmm? Nevermind, must just be bad luck.

I said ill take it my friendly local gagarge much to their disgust, and replied by saying you must have picked it up on the way here, really....
another 40mins later, oil & filter replaced after some confusion what oil to use, but i think they got there in the end.

Popped to see the folks this weekend, round trip of around 350miles, and when i got home, thought best check the oil, just for piece of mind (as its hot and been standing for 10-15mins) and in-line of the instructions in the handbook, well i wasnt expecting to find the oil about approx 15mm over the max mark on the dip stick!, thinking i had lost the plot alltogether, got a neighbour to verify my lack of common sence, and he agreed, it is well over the max mark....

So now have got to go all the way to get them to sort it in the morning, tried using their website and they have a 5 working day response time. Lets just hope the local NT gagrage will drain some and see what they have to say.

So a word of caution guys, best check the oil level and grade before you leave. Yes it was cheap, cheaper than Opie can supply just the oil. I suppose you pay for what you get. lesson learnt.

Let you know their response tomorrow. Wish me luck it hasnt done any damage.

Used National Tyres 3 times in the last couple of years and had good service from them, even to the point where I wrote an email to their HQ praising my experience with them. Ok so you expect them to be less trained than that of a main dealer, wouldn't you? Well you found that they put too much oil in. My dad had an 04 Toyota Avensis D4D, decided that he couldn't be bothered doing the oil and filter change on it and decided to put it in to the main dealer in Perth. Job done, youd think. Well next morning he checked the dip stick, only too find the same as you, way too much oil, and that from a £70 an hour so called trained technician............ Just goes to show that even the professionals screw up. Same as the Kwik Fit thing this week, I bet money that there are good Kwik Fits out there, its all down to the people they employ.
TBH there is no reason to put too much oil in. These guys should have instant access to the correct amount of oil required.

Thats my point really, it must be easy (ish) to find the quantity of oil required to the type of car, and yes, your are very right there are good and bad in every walk of life, this field will be no exception.
On the flip side, my local tyre place has just moved and now does servcing and MOTs etc.. so wont be an issue next time and they only quoted me £90 all in for the tyre too!
Ill wait and see what NT they say in the morning, im hoping its an apology and problem fixed quickly and more importantly, no damage..

Just remember as well that all these places are only franchises ... while I have never had a problem with National Tyres in Shrewsbury, that's no guarantee your local branch will do a good job. They're only as good as the quality of the management.

But cover yourself anyway ... when you turn up, take a couple of mins to blatantly obviously physically check all your tyres - in plain view of the staff. Love to see them 'find' a nail/screw/thumbtack and explain it then!

I always leave SPECIFIC instructions for servicing and oil changes :
Please fill to between the maximum and minimum only
Do NOT fill to the maximum

This often raises eyebrows, or comments like, "We always make sure it leaves with the oil at the maximum"

I then check the oil before the leaving premises
As per procedure, I check it when the engine is cold then recheck once the engine has been idling such that the temperature needle starts to move
The VX dealership I usually use has observed me doing this and no longer question my request

Not at all, they quite often come across and ask if eveything is alright and the service has been completed
They know I have caught them out before
Ever since then what I ask for is what I get

However, at servicing the marks on the service parts probably gives the game away!
