Hi mate, welcome to the forum. I have a 52 1.8 sxi so they should be the same.
The oil fill hole is on top of the engine, there's a yellow cap to the left of the engine cover with oil can symbol on.
The sump plug is at the lowest point of the sump sticking out a little, you'll need a T45 Torx (star) bit. Its best to use a new sump plug, £3.50 from the stealers, I have the part number somewhere.
The filter on mine is the disposable canister type. My removal tool was broken so I hammered a screwdriver into the side and turned anti-clockwise and repeated untill I could unscrew it by hand. When fitting new filter put some new oil around rubber seal.

Can anyone post me a picture of the location of the oil filter on the 1.8 engine?

I've been doing an oil flush and oil filter change on my car but for the life of me I can't figure out where my oil filter is supposed to be located!

There's a white cannister type thing on the front of my engine which is what I think the oil filter is but a lot of manuals and how 2's and websites are all showing the black cap type of oil filter that you use a socket to remove...

I can't find this black cap type on my engine anywhere??

Buy a new oil filter, find the bit that matches it and swap them over
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Some filters have a moulded "nut" on the end, some don't, some are black, some are white, it all depends on the brand.

The "white thing" you're talking about is the filter. Use a filter wrench to unscrew it, or hammer an old screwdriver through the metal and use it to turn the canister. (as said somewhere above)

Run the engine for a few minutes before doing the oil, if it's warm it will flow much better. Be careful though, the filter is next to the exhaust manifold which gets very very hot!

hey DNS, so that white thing really is the oil filter...

Me and my brother have one of those crappy oil filter removal wrenches, the type with the bike chain on it and for the life of us we can't get the wrench to grip the canister tight enough to turn it! damn thing.

So you say to hammer a screwdriver into it and turn it off that way?

Won't that break something!? you don't want a big hole in your oil filter housing now do you? :|

I have a home made chain type fliter removal tool, but as you can see not a lot of room to get it on with the 1.8 and like you mine sliped,, so,, I tie wraped the chain realy tight be measuring it on the new filter, then taped the chain onto the filter, and,, it worked,, as soon as the filter moved a bit it unscrewed by hand/ well when I say hand I mean pink marigolds

Thanks for all the help guys, it turns out that my halfords is a load of crap, all the parts they list in their little books for my car were wrong.

had to exchange my paper type oil filter for a new canister type, and the thermostat they sold me wasn't the correct one it was for the older vectra c model. hmpf.

    Finally got everything sorted though!
