Exclamation Signum... why have I got a bodged rear left fog? Anyone else the same?

Well rear brake bulb was gone and needed replacing. After an hour of trying to manipulate one of the rear light thumb screws off.. which had to be ripped off in the end i finally got the rear cluster seperated....

However my bulb kit was missing the 12v 21w bulb needed so I had to swap one from either the fog or reverse... Now I did a lights check and although the reverse light worked the fog bulb wasnt illuminating...

Then i remembered the loose brown wire from cleaning out my spare wheel bay. Turns out my car has a loose wire from the right hand cluster to the left, which was hanging bare! Pressed it against the fog light connector and sure enough it lit up!

So i wondered... seeing as i have no extra wires in the loom, who else has this BODGE of a fog light? And can anyone take their rear light connector off and see if the fog wire has been clipped it properly or if it is just 'pushed into the hole' with the bare wire making contact with the cluster connections?

Very interested to know if this was factory or if the last owners screwed around with the electrics

On the plus side... found out I'm entitled to a refund on the work done on the cracked coolant tank last summer ahhh relaxed again lol

When they leave the factory they only have the offside one working as there is no requirement to have one each side.

Looks like someone has kindly wired the other one up for you.

Oooh really... in that case I feel kind of happy :P Definately needs squaring away though, another job on the list lol. Make it a permanent lead and tuck it away with the normal loom me thinks.

That would explain why it never gave a bulb warning for that fog! Although being based in germany I should of probably checked earlier as I probably could of been pulled lol!

Cheers for updating me. If anyone else would like this professional 'mod' PM with a payment of £50 lool

the bulb should be in the holder already which is strange. It is in mine but don't work. You would think if vx put the bulb in they would wire it aswell

Your more likely to get pulled over in germany if you have both rear fogs on.

It is done for safety, so the light intensity change when applying the brakes is more apparent and instantly noticeable on the non fog light side.

The EU directive on vehicle lighting says that there need only be one fog light situated between the centre and the off side of the vehicle. If it has 2 then thay have to be symmetrical. The off side is relative to the country of registration, and need not be changed for driving on the wrong side of the road, eg European mainland.

Personally, I would definitely NOT do this lash job of running a wire from the off side to the near side, for the reason above. Also blinding the person behind you with both fogs isn't my idea of fun when I am sat behind an inconsiderate driver who leaves them on, or uses them innappropriately.

If you do wire it up, don't forget to tell you insurance company, as you have modified the function of your exterior lights from standard operation.

Fog lights are one of my pet hates, as far too many people don't know how or when to use them correctly.

It mentions in the handbook that the bulb in the non working foglight can be used as a spare bulb should one of the others blow (or words to that effect). Makes sense to keep a spare bulb in the cluster so it's easy to find.
