EGR Fault Code - is this the problem?
    Hi guys,

Looking to pick someones brain with a little more knowledge than my own. My car (Z19DTH Vectra) has been suffering from the dreaded "no power until 2500rpm then boost" and "Limp mode" problems for a little while now. Reading all the threads i thought my swirl valves had gone and would need a new inlet manifold etc.

However, i had someone run Tech2 on it and the only faults it came up with were:

P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected B-036
P2279 Intake Air System Leak Detected B-035

The guy who scanned it for me said it was likely my EGR is knackered and that this would be what was causing the problems

Does this sound right to you? Would a knackered EGR really cause my car to run so poorly? I have tried to clean it as it was really clogged up but if anything it has made it worse so I will look to get a new one if this is the problem.

Hope you can help with advise,

    Thanks,

    Dave

Swirl valves won't always show up as a fault code or the code's can be misinterpreted, best way to check them is visually, Remove the Egr & clean it thoroughly , If this helps / cures, your on the right track. It takes a few mins to check the swirl valves, just pop the engine cover off & take a peek..

I have tried cleaning the EGR and it has made no differenve if not making it worse and the Exhaust emissions light is on all the time.
I have visually checked the swirl valves and the connector seems to be ok - doesnt seem loose or anything.

after cleaning egr valve clean the boost sensor too. Also dose of redex in the fuel helps before and after a clean. Light goes out after a few days if you have cleaned it well. I have heard its after x number of restarts but i cant remember how many.

It's not just the connector though, Get somebody to rev it up high whilst you watch the swirl Valves, There should be no gunky/oily mess around the valves. When they are under load/boost conditions, They are forced out of the inlet manifold & upwards, Loosing boost & catching the underside of the manifold restricting movement, If you see them move up/rattle whilst somebody reving it, then they are Bu66ered, as stated , under load this will be much worse ..

Sounds like your EGR valve is jammed open. When this happens, the air being sucked in by your turbo is going back down the exhaust pipe through the open valve, hence no power until higher revs.It looks like the solenoid that moves the rod that controls the flap has burned out leaving the valve in the open position.
As a quick fix,try blanking the valve at the exhaust inlet point with a 1mm stainless steel oval plate. This should stop the cycle and give you your performance back.(There's a "HOW 2" on EGR blanking).FELIXX.

If your car has a DPF then consider having it manually regenerated or clean it out.
I know it doesn't sound right but my limp mode and code 2279 was a blocked DPF.
i was advised by member Benny (a Vaux technician) it was the DPF and he was right....

Hmmm.... this is all a bit confusing.

The swirl valves do not look oily or gunky - it is quite clean around them.

I do not think the solenoid is stuck open as when i cleaned it the valve was moving freely and the solenoid was closed. However, when im driving if its in a LIMP type mode if I switch the engine off and straight back on I get boost again.

Im just trying to figure out if i should spend £100 on a new EGR. If it fixes the problem then i dont mind but dont want to waste money.

There is a school of thought that has tried fully blanking the egr, and yes though you do get the check engine light, you should restore full boost avoid limp mode and identify the EGR as the culprit.
