    Default Not enjoying this...

I decided today i was going to start my brake conversion and thought it was best to start on the fronts. I have drained all the brake fluid and got a bottle of DOT5.1 to go in after. Took the calipers and carriers off no problem but theb when going to take the discs off i hit a problem, on both sides!!!

The problem is that the last person to do the brakes have destroyed the screws locating the discs so i have had to drill them out! The passenger side wasnt too bad but the drivers side is a nightmare!

I decided to give it a rest before i get too annoyed at it, i will continue later tho...

I can sympathise, I had to abandon the locating screw idea on the wifes golf and just shear the thing as it was bodged and thread locked in place!

Fortunately the wheel does a great job of locating the disc and even the dealer was surprised at me trying to buy the replacement screws

Time to break out the angle grinder

Seems overly common on Opels for some reason.

Well the fronts are done and yes i had to break out the grinder. Tried drilling it at first but that wasnt working so got the fun tools out. i just took the head off and left a good piece in there to help with locating the disc and help getting it out when its replaced

I don't think I've ever come across a car with them intact.. tbh i don't think they're there for location purposes..they just keep the disc pressed against the hub when wheel off (avoiding crap dropping down back of disc/hub face) imo... a lot of after market discs dont have them.

The metal is way too soft, that's partly why this is such a problem. That, and because people try to bodge it with the wrong tool.

The bleed nipple is also really soft, need to take care with it unless you want it completely rounding off! Even using the right brake service tool I managed to mark mine a bit.

I would be happy to pay a few quid for titanium parts for little stuff like this. If the bleed nipple gets round then this is a problem!!

I agree with you mate, the metal is far too soft and i didnt really want to get grinding but had no choice. I would happily pay extra for stronger parts

You to get 10.9 grade bolts these are the hardest
Normally readily available from hardware shops
I.E. the old fashion shops not supermarket type places

If this really is the case then im disappointed.

I have now done everything and again had to grind the bolts out. Not happy but at least its done. Will get pics up when i have bled the brakes. I also have pics from my claying so will put these up as well

Bleed nipples are terrible!!! When are manufacturers going to realize they (no pun intended) really need to be much bigger and stronger!! My car only has 43k on it but they bleed nipples look terrible!!! I really want to replace the brake fluid but I just know that at least 2 out of the 4 are likely to break or just round off. When I replaced the pads I caked the nipples in copper grease more in hope that they may come off easier at a later date.
