Try www.startermotor-alternator.co.uk in Plymouth. Brand new unit for my 06 CDTI was £140+ delivery. No exchange needed. Seems fine so far although its only been on a few weeks. Came with years guarantee.
alternator should put out around 14 volts at the battery with the engine running. Test across the battery terminals with a multimeter. I made up tester with an old smiths volt gauge and plug it into the cig lighter/aux power socket to check the output while driving.
all done, 40 quid to the mechanic and 50 quid for the guy to repair the unit
