Default Costs of owning a private plate.

In the last few days i have been thinking about buying a private reg.
I have found a few that begin with G51 as i think it would go well on my GSi but what are all the costs involved, i have been informed (but if it's true) that you have to pay a yearly fee.
Also what do i do if say 4/5 years down the line i want to sell the car and put the original registration back on.

You dont have to pay yearly fee whilst its on your car. If you decide to sell your car, you have two options. Transfer it to your new car or place it on retention, both will incur a fee.

There is more info on the DVLA's web page

If you are going to buy one, get it from the DVLA direct - cheapest option.

The price they charge you is inclusive of transfer onto your car.

Once it is on the car there are no more charges. When you change the car it will be £80 to put on the new car or £105 to put on retention where it will cost every year to hold on retention. Prices may have gone up but thats what it was 3 years ago.

If it is a plate you want to keep, make sure it is not car specific (if you get G51, will your next car be a GSi?)

It's £105 when you put it on retention for the first year (£80 of which is the transfere fee when you register it on the new car) and then £25 per year, every year it stays on retention.

You pay a cost to transfer it to the car as well as the purchase price (unless it is an all in one price) then it costs about £80 to transfer it to another car or £105 to put on a retention for 12 months, and £25 for a second, then the same for a third year after that you lose the right to the plate, however it is free to transfer on to the next car and if you go to a local licencing office with a retention cert, it is instant to switch you will get a tax disc issued immediately, so a phone call to insurance is all you have to do after you get the plates made up.

You don't usually have a hold over it however it is generally held and transferred back to your car if you do a subsequent transfer of the cherished number

If you sell the car, where possible, the DVLA will reissue your car with the old reg, they cant guarantee this though if memory serves me correct.

    Both correct.
DVLA holds the original number allocated to the car when it was first registered.
The car "usually" regains the original number when the personal plate is assigned to another vehicle.
If your original number is no longer available for whatever reason, the car will be reassigned a new number thats relative to the year it was first registered.
