Exactly the same with me (on a Vectra 'B'). The rear tyres had castellated and were making a significant noise above 50mph, sounded just like a bearing. Changed the bearings to no good effect (old ones in my shed as well....). Then noticed the castellations or irregular feathering of the tyres. Replaced the tyres* and silence.
Not sure what caused the tyres to castellate though - the new ones seem fine?

    * The tyres were nasty 'Linglong' so I put it down to that make

The easy way to check for bearing wear is to jack up the wheel, clear of the ground and spin it as fast as you can. If the bearing is wearing you will hear the drone change pitch as the speed of rotation changes.

Also wear in the rear upper control arms can cause wear on the inner part of the rear tyres.
