Default Whats this on my F17 gear box?

I'm doing a gearbox oil change, as soon as a get a deep socket to remove reverse light switch. While having a look I noticed a metal part bolted to the cover plate thats not on the pics in the HM. Anyone know what it is? Its a 52 1.8 sxi, f17.

Also anyone know what size socket I need for the reverse light switch?
    Cheers

why you taking the reverse light switch off for to drain the oil out of you box, when take the plate off the bottom to drain and to put the oil back in ,the breather hole at the top.

It's a pita that the f17 doesn't have a drain plug or filler hole. I did consider using the gb oil level plug to re-fill but it looks a bit tricky to get a pipe round there as it's sort of at the back behind the wheel. Atleast with the reverse light switch its on the top-ish so I can get to it without removing the batt box.

Ah that makes sense, thanks mate.
The haynes manual says to use the reverse switch, but I suppose it also says 'unclip' when it means 'cut fingers, swear then smash with hammer'. Where is the breather from the reverse switch?
    Cheers Bill
