    Default plugs,, thoughts

A neighbour has just asked what plugs for a vec 1.8 should he use, I said do not use GM plugs, this is the reason, after only 12,000 on new GM plugs although the plug looked in very good condition ALL three gaps on each were very different, some were a very big gap and others were a tiny gap all four plugs were the same, so neighbour said "what caused that then" I said er,,,er,,, I dont know but I know a few blokes who might,,,,,,so what did cause this, thanks ANT
ps ALL gaps were the same when fitted..

Strange that as the best plugs for the 2.2 are GM OE ones.

I have only used GM spark plugs in my 1.8. I did change them at 60K. The car is now on 149,000 and the spark plugs are still in. The old ones were in perfect order, so I haven't replaced them again yet. Maybe I should remove them and check, but that's another story. Gap consistancy and accuracy on the old removed plugs was fine, as was colouration and general condition.

The only things that I can think of for varying gaps would be, inconsistant gap when fitted (knocked during fitment), or maybe (just maybe) that is how they should be? I assume you mean triple earth type from the wording you have used?

Mine were single electrode. I wouldn't dismiss all GM plug just on the basis that you think you had a problem, which is not verified.... Hope that makes sense.

Some would say uneven spark plug wear could be down to the length of the HT leads, the plugs on the longer leads wearing more, something to do with capacitance.. Does the 1.8 use HT leads.. Or could it be a dodgey coil pack.. I dunno, Im a compooter fixer me.. Just googled, thats all, lol ..

    Coil on plug.

Each spark plug has 3 electrodes, and he said that each electrode on each plug had a different gap.

    Confusing to me.

quite correct Ste,, ALL three electrodes on all four plugs the gap was all over the place one electrode would be a tiny gap the electrode next to it would be a massive gape etc etc, on all plugs, the plugs looked a perfect colour and the car was running fine I just decided to have a check,

I put BOSCH SUPER twin electrode in, I have checked these at 8,000 miles the plugs still look new just the right colour, and both gaps on all four plugs are as they went in. perhaps I just had a duff set of the GM ones.

knocked during fitment could explain a tight gap, but some of the gaps (remember there are twelve gaps) were massive

    Right. I don't know then.

I do wonder why you are changing your plugs so frequently though. The posted service interval is 80,000 miles...

    Mine are single electrode.
