Default The legality of HID xenon's

I read much about these before taking the plunge and fitting a set to my car about the "you'll get pulled" and they are illegal etc etc etc

Roughly how Many folks here have had issues with MOT's or having had a Tug from fuzz

By the letter of the law, and I can quote it if needed, they ARE illegal if fitted retro-spectively, unless they are self-levelling with headlight washers. They also require headlamps designed for them, which by chance the Vectra's elipsoidal lenses are the same as used by the factory fit xenons. The problems arise when fitted to normal reflector lenses as these do not focus the beam properly and scatter the light.

Now, regardless of the above, I fitted a kit to my old Vectra, no problems with it's MoT, and because they weren't blinding anyone (and I fitted some washers nozzles to it, even though they never worked...) no-one cared. I did take them out for an insurance repair, jsut in case though...

I now have factory fitted xenons in my Signum, so have fitted the kit to my fog lights for the hell of it. Still can't see ****** all with them on, but they look cool...

Had them on my last 2 cars and had no problems with the law or getting through MOT's. My old Volvo went through two MOT's without a mention. I thought they would be an issue as its obvious they are there because they have to warm up for a few seconds and look very blue. But no issues and never been flashed either.

Read up on the Vehicle Lighting Regulations regarding retrofitting HID/Xenons.... spoke to a few roads policing officers.... then got a kit and fitted it

As has been said... by the letter of the law a retrofitted kit is illegal unless it is fitting the full system from a higher spec of the same vehicle..... washer system, level sensors, etc

BUT ... by the wording of the Vehicle Lighting Regulations specifically on this subject, they may be considered acceptable if the kit is fitted in suitable projector type headlamps, may be height adjusted from inside the car (either by manual or automatic means) and passes MoT test criteria - light colour, beam pattern, aim, position, switching, etc

So the way I see it, if you fit a kit and choose lamps giving a white or nearly white light that points in the right direction with the correct pattern.... you're fine

Two MOT's and not a problem. No interest from plod either

If you have the silly purple ones I think your going to get a tug as our chavie mates tend to go ott on the colour.

Keep it sensible with 6000k or so and you will be fine
