    Default Date of Manufacture

I read somewhere that you can find out the date of manufacture of Vauxhalls if you pull out the ashtray and look at the underside of it. There's a year and month grid that gives you a date. By this method, my car was made in June 2003, which is a bit odd, as it wasn't registered until April 2004.
Anyone know if this is accurate? And. if so, what the heck was my car doing for all that time, taking a gap year?

Most likely sitting in a field in Luton

I saw a pre-facelift on a 06 plate the other day, so that has been laying around for quite sometime.

Maybe the ashtray was made on that date, the rest of the car sometime later?

You've never been to Luton, have you? We don't have that many fields around here!
In the 70's they used to have huge car parks full of cars, but I don't know where they store 'em now.

Only go to Luton, once every four months to give blood in the donation centre..

Up until a couple of years ago, in Caddington, but I think that is empty how as well..

There will be a date stamp on pretty much every component. So your ashtray was made in June 2003 but would have been part of a massive order from GM to the supplier.

It may have sat around for a while but I would doubt a year. On both our 2 Zafira GSi's and our two vectras past and present, I ordered them with options, at least you know they are factory fresh then.

But to be honest, if they are sitting for a few months it won't do them any harm.

If you take a look at yours, you'll see that it's not a moulded in date stamp, but a box that's been manually scratched to show the date. Most injection moulded components have some kind of automated system in the mould to give a manufacturing mark.
It may not be accurate information, but maybe someone who knows when their car was made could take a look?
