This is the one I use. Works fine, but for my iPod touch the supplied 12V charger did not work, but I just use my Garmin charger instead.

That's NOT an FM modulator - as it says in the description. It's an FM transmitter. A transmitter sends the music to the radio via a frequency which you tune the radio to. It is not great quality and can suffer from interference. A modulator sends the signal via an aerial lead which you connect direct to the aerial input. Still have to tune the radio to that freq but since it's not transmitted it suffers less (but not completely free of) interference.

Been to my local Halfords and can get and Ipod adapter fitted coming from the back of the head unit which also charges your Ipod for £100.00 ish

or

an Aux in which is a standard input, no charging up of unit £70.00 ish


I though this was quite a reasonable price for it being fitted also.

LOL, here modulator and transmitter or whatever you named are referred to the same thing. Unless the power of transmitter or modulator is too low(e.g. fm modulator in nokia N97), differences in sound quality between direct wired or wireless modulator is very small and neglectable.

But why there are some FM modulator need direct wired to the antenna? It's because by this way the power transmitted outside the vehicle can be kept as small as possible to comply EMC and other EU rule as well as privacy. Interference of this type of modulator is same as wireless one because the antenna is still there receiving the signals unless the modulator was installed in series of aerial and headunit and able to cut off radio signal from antenna.

Theoretically speaking analog FM can reach about 15k Hz playback, while tape can do 10k and CD can do over 20k. Therefore the sound quality of FM is better than tape but cannot reach CD. (DAB excluded)

I believe most FM transmitter can reach about 11-13k. So, it's your choice between hard wired fm modulator or wireless fm modulator.

However if you are very sensitive to the sound quality then choose the headunit with aux in is the best solution.

In my old ford, i use another way: I "hijack" the preamp and inject the aux signal directly to the preamp and cut off the signal from any other source. Hence when there is a aux input the head unit will play the aux regardless what is currently being play.
