    Default Strange problem with starter, Help needed

    Hi Guys I have a problem with my 1.9cdti (150) and really need some help.

    The problem is that occasionally my starter motor tries to engage whilst the engine is running, when this happens the car cuts out and the spanner light is thrown up. When the car is restarted it starts no problem and the spanner light disappears.

    I have had the starter checked and it is fine no sticky solenoid etc, My next thought is to change the starter relay and the ignition switch. The real problem is this fault is intermittent and it has only occurred twice in the last week so pinning down the fault is difficult.

    Could this possibly be cim? related, I don't really know much about control modules does this control the starter signal?. Is it worth putting the car in to see if there are any stored fault codes.



    Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated

    The starter relay would most likely be the easiest thing to change to start with.

    Thanks for the quick reply. I plan to change the relays tomorrow and hope that sorts it, but knowing my luck and this car I can see it costing me £'ss

    If not easiest defiantly the cheapest mate. Something is shorting out and making the starter kick in, does it run for long when it kicks in?

    It usually sounds as if it kicks in for a few seconds, this is usually long enough to stall the engine. There was one point were it was on constant, i.e when you turned the key to posistion ii (ignition on) the starter would crank. Thats what is making me think sticky solenoid or relay.
