Default Mileage challenge for 3.2 (petrol) owners

I set myself a challenge this week to see what mileage I could do with a full tank.

I reset the computer after filling up with a full tank of standard unleaded.

After 4 days of granny driving on mixed roads (As’ - cruise set @ 60mph, Motorway – cruise set @ 70mph [when possible] and town/city driving) I ended up with the figures below.

    Trip consumption – 9.2 gal
    Trip distance - 289.4 miles
    Avg speed – 36mph
    Avg consumption - 31.2 mpg
Range says 70 miles (assuming continued granny driving)

I will need to check the mpg tomorrow (when I fill up) to see if it matches the computer

Has anyone done a similar test for a 3.2?

P.S. It’s not easy being overtaken by micras etc.

P.P.S. No cheating by resetting bits of the computer display

P.P.P.S Try not to laugh tooooo much diesel guys.

I'm Not laughing! Here are my figures - Trip 2 reading from last tank of fuel (just empty now), Trip 1 reading since I got the car about a month ago:

I think the best I could do would be another 30 - 40 miles, I only have fond memories of 400+ miles on a tank (I assume all vecs have the same size of tanks)

I woul stress the driving drove me nuts, it was aimed at super economy (i don't get near this this normaly)

Ukanalyst, how come you getting such low fuel figures? Is it a heavy right foot?! Thats putting me off getting a 3.0 (well, only a bit!). lol

Heavy right foot and prompt moving will give a reading like that in a 3.0CDTi. Listen to VauxVeteran he is the man for economy.

My 1.9 CDTi is currently getting at best 32mpg stomping it everywhere but it is a new engine. I should be getting on average around 41mpg! Few thousand miels to go yet tho.

Maybe a bit heavy but I drove her like a granny (changing very early before Turbo kicks in, 30 in 5th, crusie at 70 in 6th on clear motorway) from around 80 miles and I could only manage 45 Just!

    I can only assume either:

Vauxhall are seriously lying about 60mpg
    or
My 18" alloys really affect the fuel economy that much!
    or
there's something wrong with my car
    or
It's been re-mapped/modified somehow by previous owner (although doubtful as previous owner was Vauxhall Fleet mgmt so would have belonged to a VX Manager)

I dunno, kind of accepted it but then I have been having a few issues with fuel guage. ...

today parked up and had more than 30 miles of diesel left (warning appears when it gets to 30 and it hadn't)
came back to car at lunch and fuel guage sat at empty for a while then popped up to top of red sector
Trip computer read Range --miles for at least 30 secs
Trip computer then read Range F miles for around 10 secs
Trip computer read Range --miles for at least 20 secs
Trip computer read Range 18miles and warning appeared
Went about my journey (fuel guage needle sat at top of red sector whole time and after a while the orange petrol pump came on but not flashing)
Later Range dropped to 5 miles and I pulled in for fuel, only added 5 litres as wasn't my preferred garage.
Got back in car and range still 5 miles ... continued to count down, parked up and range said 3 miles (yet fuel guage needle still at top of red sector and orange light off)
Got in car to go home and range continued to count down until 0 where it sat for rest of journey home (for 19 miles)
Got home, engine off, popped inside, came back out, ignition on now computer says Range 24 miles!!

Wow! that was a long way around of saying don't know if my car is faulty ... will monitor it methinks.

Mine also did this. Filled it to the brim before it went into the garage and they set up the fuel gauge with Tech2. Perfect after that.

And Vx do bull about the 60mpg!!!

Yes I have climate so it comes on when it needs it ... tis a good point that may have something else to do with it but then I also had climate on my previous elite 2.2dti and I used to average 40ish on that when driving around Manchester and saw 60mpg on long motorway runs

    Who said anything about 60mpg?!
According to Vx website 3.0 fuel consumption is:
    Preface: 28.5/51.4/39.8
    Facelift: 28.8/54.3/40.9
