I've got one and it takes about three minutes and then the water is 80 degrees C. It takes the three minutes to get to the max temperature.

depending on the distance between the boiler and the hot water output location, ie, bathroom, kitchen etc it should never take more than a minute or two.....maximum.

Infact, if its taking that long, I'm surprised its getting hot at all.

Does it only get hot whilst central heating is on??

Or can you get hot water WITHOUT central heating??

Combination boilers should give hot water almost straight away as the burner should ignite when the hot tap is turned on.

There seems to be people with knowledge about combi boilers on here. Can anyone tell me why my heating comes on when having a shower or filling up the sink to wash up?

Not an expert by any means, just know what they are supposed to do. If your heating comes on when running hot water I would GUESS a valve is stuck, this might also cause the delay in your water warming up.

im a gas heating engineer mate, sounds like the diverter valve on your combi is away, depending on the boiler make and model, could either be stuck or the diaphram is split,

as for the first problem on this thread, what make is the boiler and how old is it? most combi boilers take roughly 2-3 mins to give full temperature to the hot water outlet, unless its got a heat bank then it will give you hot water almost instantly,

the diverter sounds like the culprit, or possibly DHW flow switch/turbine, as in the case of worcester 28i junior or similar, which don't have diverter valves. (I am also plumber/heating engineer)!!!!

Most newish Combi Boilers have separate water supply direct into the heat exchange, with central heating being on a closed circuit with top up link.
