Default Need help with my V6 3.0 cdti

Hi, I'm on my second signum, the first one my 1.9 cdti was a dream but this one is a bit of a pain. Driving today witht the engine cold the dreaded spanner light came on for the first time, engine sounded really rattley and was very erratic, so much so even if I prodded the accelerator a bit the turbo came on. After a couple of miles of this (I couldn't pull over before) I stopped, switched it off for a couple of mins and restarted it, then it seemed fine. Also from the drivers side behind the wheel you can hear a ticking noise when it is idling.

I can see these engines are a nightmare so I guess I'm not alone on this, anyone got any ideas before I set fire to my car in frustration?!? (I love it and hate it equally!!!!)

    Many thanks

    Alan

Hi celes, no nothing else, it's a 55 plate Elite. Runs fine, pulls fine and zero smoke, really bizarre I thought. Have just driven back home from visiting my parents and it cut out going up a hill but the spanner light never came on. Called into the garage that I know and trust that is near where I live and they said they'll plug it into the diagnostics on Monday (typical it happens on a weekend!!!)

The guy in there said it could EGR valve, could this be the case?

Does the warning light come on consistently now?
If so, then the code will be stored making diagnosis much easier
If not, then is the engine going into "safe mode" with lowered revs and response?
Also, if the warning light is only coming on occasionally, simply stop take the key out of the ignition, wait a few minutes, then restart
Personally, wait until the fault becomes permanent, it is then much easier to diagnose

As for the engine reliability, this is one of the most reliable I have ever had, however it is not a VX ecotec engine!
However, when something does go wrong it's not cheap...
I've only had one SCV fail, the dealership was unable to diagnose it initially, but after a few weeks once it become permanent and the part had arrived it was completed under warranty at a cost of nearly £750
Sadly the cost is generally down to a poorly designed engine, somehow I think the theory "It won't breakdown so noone will need access" was used

Okay thanks for the help guys, I have an update!

Before the end of yesterday I filled the car with Shell diesel (and have previously used Texaco and other independent garages) and pretending to be a mechanic I lifted the bonnet and sprayed different electrical connectors with wd40 and made sure they were on tight (I don't know which ones as I'm not mechanically minded)

This morning about to start my journey, everything fine and things seem different with the car now. It is alot smoother, the turbo kicks in earlier and it seems more capable at lower revs in a higher gear if that makes sense. The one bizarre thing I never mentioned yesterday was that 1st gear had always been a bit jerky, you'd hardly give it any revs and it would just be really lumpy, I tried to avoid using 1st if I could help it. now 1st is fine and you rev all the way through it's and it silky smooth. Have done 100 miles in it so far today so fingers crossed.

When was the fuel filter last replaced?
I know the service book states 2 years / 20K miles or 2 years / 30K miles, but it clearly doesn't last more than 1 year / 10K miles
I recommend you replace it, if older than that
I now replace mine every 10K miles and once replaced the difference is quite noticeable
