    Default Air Con Fixed

Just got a call from the garage to say that the air con is now fixed on my SRi. The seals had gone bad. Most likely the previous owner had not used it often enough. Apparantly you should switch it on regularly even in winter to circulate the gas and keep things lubricated? Does this sound right, or is the garage just spinning me a yarn?

it's the truth mate, i give mine a whirl about once a week during the winter months and mines still going strong...if it's not used often enough the seals can dry and become brittle and disintegrate leading to leaks

It's even in the manual so it must be twue

Mine's on most of the time anyway.... the cost in fuel really is minimal, so I barely ever switch it off.

Yea systems these days don't put as much strain on the engine as they did 20 years ago.

Is there any official figure on the MPG drop with the air con on?? I've totally missed out getting it done this year, might look into it during the winter to see if I can get it fixed cheaper LOL - probably won't make any difference to price

I have tried mine with aircon off and aircon on, in my opinion it is better to leave it on constantly, even in winter, as the difference in fuel consumption is not worth bothering about. If it really bothers you that much try driving/accelerating just a little bit slower and that will more than make up for the extra fuel consumption.
