Default 2.2 petrol mpg figures vary widely. why?

    Hi All

I have an '04 2.2 SRi which I understand gives a combined 34mpg, according to Parkers and others. I was considering swapping for a Signum 2.2 petrol and then noticed how widely the figures vary. Anyone know what is going on here?

    Vauxhall Vectra Hatchback (02-05) 2.2 SRi 5d 34mpg
    Vauxhall Vectra Hatchback (05-08) 2.2i Direct SRi 5d 37mpg

    Vauxhall Vectra Estate (03-05) 2.2i Direct SRi 5d (04) 34mpg
    Vauxhall Vectra Estate (05-08) 2.2i Direct SRi 5d (05) 36mpg

    Vauxhall Signum (03-08) 2.2 Elite 5d 34mpg
    Vauxhall Signum (03-08) 2.2i Direct Elite 5d 34mpg

When looking at the Vectra it seems to improve if it is a Direct model. It also seems to improve because it has 6 gears and the non-Direct models have 5 gears (unless it is a Signum?). I can also understand why the estate is not quite as good. I cannot understand why the Signum is only 34mpg whether it has 5 or 6 gears or whether it is a Direct or not. And why the Signum Direct is less than the Estate Direct? Confused. It is the Signum that interests me as a next car but not if it is the least efficient of the bunch.

    Cheers,
    Rich

Estates and Signums are slightly down on performance and fuel economy compared with their hatchback equivalents. This is largely due to their shape and kerbweight and the fact that they are slightly less aerodynamic with a slightly higher drag coefficient, and hence slightly less fuel-efficient, and produce slightly higher CO2 emissions.

The 2.2 direct is slightly more fuel-efficient than the non-direct with the change to direct fuel injection.

Fair enough but the Signum direct and non-direct are both 34mpg? And odd that the Signum would be heavier and / or less aerodynamic than the estate?

    Still confused

Just goes to show that manufacturer's figures cannot be taken as gospel, and that they are arrived at by testing a single sample car at a single point in time, under specific testing conditions, and are therefore only intended at as a guide. Road Tests in auto mags under realistic driving conditions show just how inaccurate such figures can be.

Signum only fitted the direct which is the more economical engine. Vecs didnt fit the direct till after 04.

I have a 2.2 Direct hatch 5 speed manual. It averages about 35mpg (according to my fuelly.com calcs) on a mixture of town and b road driving (and some hills), 40 mile round trip a day. In comparison we have a Panda 1.2 which is averages about 46.5mpg over the same.

Any other insight into why the Signum official mpg figure is worse than the estate? I am not convinced Vauxhall would accept a bum reading from the Dft or VCA or whoever it is that tested the car.
