Default Best Oil to use and where does it go(apart from the oil filler)

Never having bought oil for a long time (company cars for years) and had the Signum for 4 years and not bought any between services. Since my engine rebuild about 2000 miles ago I,ve used about 3 litres.

So, where does it go? It dont smoke, the exhaust is not very sooty, it isnt leaking.

Is it just bedding in as it would when running in?

I know I need 5W30 fully sythetic but which to use, GM, Castrol, Mobil and where 's the cheapest.

I use GM 5W30, as that was what was used on servicing

I have also used Tesco 5W30, when it was just £5 for two litres

3 litres in 2000 miles is quite a lot

Oil gets "consumed" by the engine
A small amount will also atomise with heat
When the engine is cold the oil can pass into the cylinders, resulting in it being burned along with the fuel
It can also pass through the liners being burned along with the fuel, making it difficult to spot on a diesel engine

5w-40 could be better on an engine using oil. If Tesco's is classified as being fully synthetic oil then it can't be any worse than anything else that currently claims to be fully synthetic.

That doesn't sound right to me, why was the engine rebuilt? If new rings were used I would expect no oil to have been used in the first 2000 miles.

The BEST (not cheapest, most commonly available, etc etc, but best) is Mobil1 0W40, which meets or exceeds GM's long life oil standards (GM-LL-A-025). A bonus is that although you can easilly find places charging £70+ per 5 litre bottle, Asda sell it for £32.
