Coming back from brid a bit back a hare darted and made it across the road, but decided to run back from where it came. It didn't make it...

Missus hates stuff like this and she once ran over a rat, and still felt bad lol...

Coming home from work one night at about 3am, I come around a corner to see a horse in the road. We both tried to avoid each other but we both went in the same direction and CRASH. Wrote off a side and the roof of my sportshatch, the horse got up and ran on it's merry way.
To add insult to my pain, according to the insurance company it was 'my fault' as horses have minds of their own and can stand in the middle of the road if they want to and it's up to cars to miss them! I wouldn't have minded if it was in the New Forrest or the moors but this horse had just kicked it's gate open in a local field.

The worst I've had was driving through Livinston and a squirrel ran out in the road and the back half of it got squished under the rear wheels of the car in front of me. Its horrible running over something but even worse to actually see it happen in front of you. The poor squirrel still tried to continue off the road using just its front half as the rear have was pretty flat and lifeless. Still can see the mental image....horrible. Felt bad for a while leaving it there, wondered if I should have stopped and put it out its misery.

I live in a rural area and have lost count of the number of rabbits that have run under the car, there's not much you can do, you go straight they stand still, you swerve to avoid them they run the same way, you stop to get them out the way and they just come back again from out of nowhere when you set off again.

When they do run under the car I always run over them again just to make sure their dead.

In my 23 years of driving I have hit a labrador (survived seemingly uninjured), a rabbit (dead) and a horse that wrote the car off, as it basically road over the bonnet and sheared the whole top of the car off. I was lucky not to be killed. The horses owner was found to be to blame for having let it out unto the road. Same would apply to cows etc.

Hit a deer in 2006, my car was only 3months old from new and about 2500miles on the clock. Had to wait for recovery van for about 3hours on country side lane. Repaired bill was about £2000, thanks to the insurance company putting me on the fault.

Deer are wild (mostly) so the insurance company has no one else to pursue for the money. I lost my ncb after my car was vandalised by jobs about 10 years ago because they had no way of discovering who had done it.
