Default Cleaned my throttle body and EGR (again)

    Hi

Just thought i'd share my experience today in case anyone else is getting irritated by the EGR juddering problem.

Ok, so i've cleaned the EGR before but the juddering came back. I decided to inspect the throttle body. I bought the gasket (P/N 55205453) and started dismantling.

I also bought the fiat semi blanking gasket for when the EGR went back on again.

I couldn't believe it when i took the throttle body off of the car, there was so much gunk on the butterfly and around the entrance that it was actually restricted in its movement. so i cleaned that all off with carb cleaner. then i decided to look in the box of tricks attached to the throttle body so pinged the clips off (mind your eyes, they don't half fly off) and that was all full of oil too. It had been seeping along the butterfly shaft and onto the electrical contacts so i cleaned all that up too.

Back to the car, i looked at the inlet where the throttle body bolts on and the channels which funnel air from the EGR into the manifold was blocked solidly with muck. I spent an hour cleaning it all out with a precision screwdriver and by the time i'd finished i had two large handfulls of solid coal looking stuff out of it, the path from the EGR was blocked solid too so it was never working properly - yet didnt throw up any codes strangely enough or make the EML come on.

Not sure how long it would take for this sort of build up to occur but i hope its another 30,000 miles before its that bad again.

noticed an instant difference with the throttle response from idle, blip the pedal and the needle flicks up quickly, no more hesitation. haven't driven it yet so it'll probably conk out knowin my luck but that amount of crap can't have been helping matters. so i have a shiny TB and EGR with Fiat gaskets on the car now and hopefully some trouble free driving for a while...famous last words

i took pics of bits n pieces but it won't let me upload them unfortunately.

i hope so, this car started playing up the day after i bought it and hasn't been particularly nice to drive since so i could really do with starting to enjoy owning this car. i've already done more to fix this car in 3 months than any other car in the entire time ive owned them.

ok pics should be up tomorrow, gotta reduce them all in size n upload them

Not exactly on topic but while a little bored this weekend i was reading the haynes manual for the MRS`s corsa C, I got tot he point about EGR (petrol engine) and it says " Early production vechiles were fitted with a egr valve, later models had the housing for the EGR but with out the valve!!!

This got me thinking could the "Valve" be removed from the cdti egr and left out ??

Be the same as blanking it wouldnt it? Im no expert though ;-) i was looking at the egr valve yesterday n wondering if u could squash the spring a bit somehow so it takes less pressure to make the valve move. Dunno how u'd do it mind u or even if it'd achieve anything. Just figured it might be less prone to sticking with less constant pressure on it

Ok here are the pics of my TB as requested. Sorry, i didn't get a pic of the Fiat EGR gasket but its identical to this one...

    http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showpo...22&postcount=1

The picture of the crud on the cloth is only a quarter of what came out during the whole operation, there was easily 2 good handfuls of the stuff and it was solid, like charcoal. I can't imagine how the EML didn't come on as there really was no air coming through those EGR inlet ports.

Taking it for a drive later so i'll see if its made any difference, bloomin hope so!

just to explain my pics a bit better, the 2 halves of the TB control box go together so that the 2 red dotted rings i've put on meet up, i guess this is a butterfly position controller. This whole circuit board was caked in oil so it took a while to clean and make the contacts good again.

The oil came through the butterly rod, arrowed in the next picture. I guess the crud built up and then heated up forcing oil from it n through all the nooks n crannys cos it really was everywhere.

Hope these pics help some of you. Its really not too bad a job to do and well worth doing...oh, and wear gloves!
