hi someone i know bought a 54plate 2.2petrol 5speed automatic.
as being there mechanic he came to me as the car has no 3rd gear,in drive it will go up gears then lose drive,in manual shift 1st/2nd/4th/5th ok but no drive in third.anyone had the same problem before?or any known faults?

sounds as if its got a dropt cog or broken teeth

checked the feed from control unit to solenoid 3 which was ok and dipped the oil which is dark brownish and smells burnt.i work on larger dumptrucks/wheel loaders etc and there all auto boxes and if the oil is dark and smells burnt it usually indicates that the clutches are slipping.any comments?
