    Default Broken pulley !?!?!?

    Right where to start,

I've recently had the full belt kit done on my 1.9 CDTI (120). There has been a rattle and the mechanic who did the job thought it was the crankshaft pulley and advised i got it done but i've been a little skint.
From reading on here the crankshaft pulley is responsible for powering the water pump and power steering along with other electrical parts and all of this seems to be working fine.

Anyway the other day i was reversing onto my drive and heard a bit of a bang but when i had a look i couldn't see anything anywhere on the car so i've been driving as normal and the rattle had actually stopped. I know it was foolish to carry on driving the car. Anyway its been a few days since and last night i heard a sort of tinkleing sound so i looked down the belt and pulley side of the engine and there is one of the pulleys just sat there rattling at the side of the engine. Its about the size of a saucer.

Can anybody tell me which pulley its likely to be ? How much its likely to cost and whats the chances i've done collateral damage ? Knowing my luck its gonna cost a ton ?

And i'll assume i shouldnt drive there car anymore ?

if its low down in on the engine it sounds like the crank pulley, they are damper pulley's with an inner and an outer ring seperated by a rubber vibration absorber. The saucer size sounds like the outer ring, which drives the auxilary belt, this drives the air con compressor and the alternator. They simply bolt on with 4 bolts and its worth changing the belt while your at it. will cost bout £80 to £100 for the belt and pulley from a motor factor, considerably more from the dealer. An independant will probably fit them for about £40.

    Cheers for the reply barney.
I've had the wheel off to remove the pulley, the other half that runs the altenator is still on and working for the time being. There was no belt or anything in there so im assuming its dropped out while driving. Here's the strange bit tho, the air con still works and everything else on the car seems fine ? having a look round i cant see another empty pulley to where the missing belt belongs either ? seems really strange to me but im no mechanic...I've read on here that there is a bolt that also needs replacing because of the tension its under but you mention there are 4 bolts ? Is it just 1 bolt on other models maybe ? Anyway mate thanks again for your help

is this the actual crankshaft pulley then ? just cant understand how half the the pulley could break off and obviously i've lost a belt but nothing has stopped working and i can't see where the other empty pulley is. the other half of pulley is still on and running the alternator perfectly at the moment..

if you have lost the belt how have can your altonator be working ? ..you mean the light isnt on the dash ...?..one little fault with vec c if the belt goes and the altonator is fine but not turning the dash light goes out beeing as it is ecu controled unlike older set ups ....looseing the altonator belt only afects the altonator and the life of the battery .....it is the bottom pulley ..it isnt the crank shaft pulley that runs the cam belt ....the proper name for this part is the torstional vibration damper ...it is two halves due to it beeing made in two parts the middle section as you can see is glued to the outter with rubber allowing for movement in the pulley in relation to the crank pulley to wich it is bolted they fail from time to time and seperate like yours ...

bottom pulley, it has seperated at the damper as i suspected, you need a new pulley and belt. If you look at the crankshaft, you will see that there is a big bolt in the middle with four smaller bolts around it. Undo all the small bolt and the rest of the broken bit will come off. you DONT undo the centre bolt. The big pulley just bolts over that. I am guessing that the belt is still on and working round the centre bit and the tensioner has taken up the slack, thats why your air con and alternator is still working. get it changed asap.

take a pic of whats left on the car.
