    Default Self service checkouts!

Now normally I'm all for nipping in for a sandwich and a newspaper, scanning it through the self service and going on my merry way. Not tonight however!

Me and the missus were both working late so went to the local Tesco to get the shopping after we had finished. After filling the trolley full of healthy snacks and proper tea's in preparation for "Operation Man Boobs" we came across a massive queue for the only 4 tills thatw were on, each one a self service till.

People were getting irate waiting in a true British, muttering under the breath way (apart from the two awful smelling junkies who brazenly skipped past each person in front of them) and I was getting nervous with my trolley stuffed full of goods as people started stacking up behind me.

Finally, a till in front of me emptied. Unfortunately it was the one right in front of the ever growing queue of distgruntled shoppers. First few items went through fine, then the Bran Flakes broke the till!

    "BEEP, PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE"

******. Help please! My Bran Flakes wont work! Young girl pops along, sticks in her code, and away move onto the bog roll!

    "BEEP, PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE"

Getting embarrassed now, I can see an old woman ready to knife me with a carrott. Young girl, looking a bit stressed puts her code in again. Start putting things through the till. Soup - Beep, Tuna -Beep, Dried apricots -Beep, Birthday card....

"BEEP, PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA"

I did! Its sitting there in the bag you stupid machine!! Girl comes along, I'm sure she calls me something not nice, puts her code in, I feel a carrot pressing into my neck from the demon with a blue rinse perm. Ok, grated cheese....

    "BEEP, PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE"

It's a bag of cheese!!! Why do I need assistance! Is it planning on slipping me a roofy and having its wicked way with me behind the trolley stand!! I think the checkout girl and the OAP are going to leave me in a bloodstained heap with size 4 shoe prints on my head.

Getting there, only a few items to go. Then I notice the Xbox 30 game with security tag on it, and the vegatables without barcodes. I think i'm going to cry. I feel like the most hated man on earth by this point, the Osama Bin Laden of the supermarket world!

I miss having people scanning my food for me.

And I forgot to scan my clubcard.

They get easier to use the more you use them, trust me. I for one like them, no operators trying to make idol chit chat for one thing. I think they make things easier and faster. You get to know the things you don't put through them like alcohol, CD's or DVD's etc so you go through the normal checkouts.

works great for me, quite late hours. rarely queue, and always get everything scanned in half the time that the checkout people do it.
HATE shopping with a passion, has to be done obviosuly
these things made it much quicker and easier for me -- Best thing to happen to tesco.

Used to work in a supermarket in my teenage years so familiar with the use if checkouts anyways so they work great for me. So much faster cause the queue when there is one is for a cluster of 4 checkouts rather than just 1. Our local tesco has just expanded from having 6 self-serve to having 10! I shop man-style, straight in, straight to what I want, back to the check out, beep beep, car, home, done!

OMG I really hate that now. My local Sainsbury's is terrible for it.

Now it may have been twenty years ago, but when we operated checkouts we were not aloud to talk, other than to say a polite "Helllo." Perhaps thats because that was before barcode scanners too...

A few items and it's throught the self-service, however amke sure your notes are crisp those damn note accepters are fickle - not like in the arcades!

Similar thing happened to me the other day in B&Q. Massive Q's for the normal tills or the 2 which were on. Went to self service till and it took the best part of 10 mins to put 4 items through. I could feel the daggers appearing in my back from the large q which had now built up for the self service tills.
