Default What is this little black box in my engine bay?

Hi guys, I have a pre-face 2.2dti SRi and recently posted a thread showing my new silicone vacuum/boost pipes and one of the guys asked what this little black box was as they dont have it in their car. Admitily he has a 2.0dti but as far as I know the 2.0 and 2.2dti engines are near identical. Its part of the vacuum system but really dont know what it is.

    Any ideas chaps??

Its possibly a vacuum reservoir, I dont know for sure but it is not the vacuum pump. That is mounted on the end of the cylinder head and is driven by the end of the cam shaft.

Thanks for the info alan .
Innes that has cleared up a long standing question from another member who had purchased a vec from an auction , all this vec had was the hose which leads to this reservoir but in this case it had just been sealed up .
out of interest what year is your vec it must be an early one to have that setup
    Driving vauxhall,s for 30 + years

its a vac resovoir it is mainly used when shutting the engine down when the engine is turned of the inletmanifold flap on the inlet manifold is shut allowing for a quicker shut down ...beeing as the engine is off the vac pump wont be giveing vac so it needs a tank to store it up ....if you run the enigne and get some one to turn it off while you stand at the front you will see the inlet manifold flap close then a few secounds later it will make a sound like a slight his / click then the flap will open ready for the next engine start ...
