    Default Handbrake removal

Me and glen was going to exchange handbrake levers today but when i stripped mine down i found no way of removing handbrake cable

Now according to haynes you have to remove exhaust and heat shield then undo a split ring that holds the handbrake rod to lever.
Surely there's an easy way of changing it,the end of the cable has a split washer type thing that holds cable on see pics below.

    Any help anyone ????
